Last Game

Lost 2-0 to an older Portugese team. The boys held a 0-0 draw until the last five minutes but couldn't hold on. They played very well though. More updates when I have a reliable internet connection.

We are headed back to Lisbon now to tour Benfica Stadium and watch the Europa League match tonight between Benfica and Bayern Leverkusen. If you are watching on TV, look for all the kids in red jackets!

Soccer in Spain

The team went to Spain yesterday and won 2-1. They played in a stadium, pictured above, that belongs to a third division team called Ayamonte. The boys played really well and are coming together as a team. Jonah started the game and played left back. I think playing in the stadium will probably be the highlight of his trip.

First Game!

The boys played a Villa Real developmental team tonight. After taking an early lead, they ended up losing 4-1, but the game was much closer than that. Jonah was put up front as striker and played some left wing in a 4-3-3. A nice change from his usual mid-field responsibilities. He had one nice cross-body shot that sailed wide, and created several opportunities but they weren't able to finish.

Tomorrow we are off to Spain for the second game. It starts much earlier so I should be able to get a bunch of photos. Tonight's game was played under the lights, so there wasn't enough light to take any decent pictures.

Photos from our first day. We arrived in Lisbon around 11:30 AM local time and quickly moved through customs to the hotel in Estoril. After a brief stopover at the hotel and a player/parent meeting, the whole boys group headed out to do some sightseeing. We finished up with a nice dinner at a local SL Benfica restaurant. This morning it's raining as we prepare to head out for the day. On the schedule: A tour of the Benfica stadium, a two hour bus ride south to the Algarve and then a training session for the boys.
